Development Status Of Fiber Optic Gyroscope

The development of fiber optic gyroscopes is changing with each passing day. Not only are scientists enthusiastic about this, many large companies have joined the ranks of research and development because of their optimistic market prospects. Because fiber optic gyroscopes are ideal for use in mobile carriers and military applications, the military in each country has invested enormous financial and energy.

At present, some developed countries such as the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Russia and so on have made great progress in the research of fiber optic gyroscopes. Some medium and low precision gyros have achieved productization, and a few high-precision products have begun to be in the military. The equipment is debugged.

The United States has always maintained a leading position in the research of fiber optic gyroscopes. At present, various types of fiber optic gyroscopes have been put into use in the United States. Research institutions represented by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have made breakthroughs in the research field, and several large companies that have developed fiber optic gyroscopes have done a great job in the development and productization of gyros. The most famous Litton and Honeywell companies represent the highest level of fiber optic gyroscopes in the world.

Following the United States, Japan has been at the forefront of the world in the practical use of low- and medium-precision gyros. Many companies are beginning to mass produce a variety of medium and low precision fiber optic gyroscopes.

Several countries in Western Europe and Russia’s first-generation fiber optic gyroscopes have also been put into production, and a few medium- and high-precision gyros have been installed in the air force, navy and missile units.

The research on fiber optic gyroscopes in China has started relatively late, but with the efforts of the majority of scientific researchers, it has gradually narrowed the gap with developed countries. The Aerospace Industry Corporation, Shanghai 803, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Northern Jiaotong University, Beihang and other units have successively carried out research on fiber optic gyroscopes.

According to the information currently available, the development precision of domestic fiber optic gyro has reached the medium and low precision requirements of the inertial navigation system, and some technologies have even reached the level of similar foreign products. However, domestic research still mostly stays in the laboratory stage, there is no product formation, and there is still a gap between applications. So we still have a long way to go in this regard.
