Inertial navigation system is usually composed of inertial measurement device, computer, control display and etc. Inertial measurement devices include accelerometers and gyroscopes, also known as inertial navigation combinations. Three degrees of freedom gyroscope is used to measure the three rotational motion of the aircraft.Three accelerometers are used to measure the acceleration of three translational motion of the vehicle.The computer calculates the speed and location data of the aircraft based on the measured acceleration signals.The control display displays various navigational parameters.
Inertial navigation system is used in all kinds of motor vehicles, including aircraft, submarines, space shuttle and other transportation tools and missiles. However, the cost and complexity limit the application.
